U.S. government mandates front-facing video cameras on all cars

screenThe Obama administration has ordered forward-viewing video cameras to be installed on all production vehicles by 2018, the White House announced today.

Following a recent government study showing that backup cameras reduce accidents and save lives, the U.S. Department of Transportation has expanded the mandate to include front-facing video systems by the 2018 model year.

“We are already committed to protecting the potential victims of back-over accidents,” said President Barack Obama. “As a father, I can only imagine how heart-wrenching these accidents can be. Rear-facing cameras represent a significant advance in reducing these tragedies.”

“As a result, we are taking the next logical step and including this life-saving technology at the front, too,” the president added. “For one thing, we know that Americans refuse to watch anything unless it’s on TV. They go to baseball games and rock concerts to watch the events on video screens. We’re confident that by adding cameras to the front of the vehicle, we can help drivers to focus on the road in front of them for once.”

Additionally, software providers have pledged to support the new mandate by developing apps that allow drivers to view the live streaming video on their cell phones and mobile devices.
