Chrysler returning to turbo encabulators for 2015

encabulatorMac’s Motor City Garage has learned that Chrysler is planning to incorporate encabulators on all North American production models in 2015. Report follows.

Current initiatives to meet impending corporate fuel economy mandates, including Multiair technology and the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, have proven inadequate to the challenge, company sources indicate. As a result, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is dusting off the encabulator technology last used on Chrysler products in the ’80s, at that time with decidedly mixed results.

Industry veterans will recall these early incabulators, many of which were plagued with reliability issues, primarily in the spurving bearings, and prone to clunk. In the next-generation technology, front-drive Chrysler models will employ conventional turbo encabulators, reportedly, while rear-drive and AWD applications will incorporate reverse-bias units, also known as retro encabulators.

Below is an original 1980s Chrysler video tutorial with a plain-language explanation of the encabulator units then in vogue.

  1. Ford recently bought the encabulator technology from Chrysler to use exclusively for their Lincoln brand. Of course, you will only get 24 months free service on it.

  2. You neglected to mention that this feature will first appear on Alfa Romeos imported to the USA. The company reports that they’ll have 19 completely new Alfa models in showrooms by Labor Day. The press release also mentions that the Ram pickup is on target to displace the Ford F150 in total sales by the end of the year.
