High Desert Chrysler collection headed for auction

1965 Plymouth Barracuda CoupeLook: Mopars, acres and acres of vintage Mopars, all languishing up on the High Desert of Central Oregon. And now the huge hoard of Chryslers is going on the auction block. Here’s a preview.

The tiny village of Brothers, Oregon (population 49) is going to get a bit larger for a few days next month, May 6 through 9. That’s when the Charles Kee collection of vintage cars, mainly Chrysler products, goes under the hammer. The auction house, James G. Murphy, is offering an on-site preview of the inventory on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 6 and 7, with the collector cars to be auctioned off on Thursday, May 8, beginning at 9 AM sharp. (The final day of the auction, May 9, will be devoted to non-collector car items, including construction equipment and shipping containers.)

The late Mr. Kee’s collection of vintage cars features mainly 1940s through 1970s Chrysler vehicles, with the 1960s and full-size C-body cars of the Chrysler Fuselage styling era (1969-1973) well represented. There’s a little bit of everything from the world of Mopar in the hoard, including a 1964 Dart GT, a 1965 Barracuda V8 automatic, and several big Imperial sedans in restorable condition. For the non-Mopar enthusiasts among you, the attractions include a pre-Chrysler era 1964 Jeep Wagoneer and a solid-looking 1970 Maverick Coupe. All told, the collection numbers several hundred cars, plus another several hundred lots of engines, parts, manuals, and memorabilia.

It’s difficult (and risky) to attempt to judge from photographs, but one way in which the Kee auction might differ from other recent sales of collector car hoards and so-called barn finds is the location. Brothers is in Deschutes County in Oregon’s High Desert, and while it’s not a true desert in the technical sense, the area is relatively arid with sparse vegetation. As a result, the cars are very well preserved—or at least that’s how they appear in the photos. It will be interesting to see how the pictures compare to the reality.

A complete vehicle list is available from the auction company website, while a sample of the inventory can be found in the gallery below.
