Video: You Belong in a 1970 Dodge

Meet the entire Dodge lineup for 1970, from Challenger to Polara, in this original factory promotion.

For 1970, the Dodge division at the Chrysler Corporation offered a remarkably broad and complete line of cars, and we get to see most every one of them in this original commercial spot. Let’s see: Challenger, Dart, Coronet, Charger, and Polara—they’re all here. All told, the five distinct car lines helped the Dodge brand to rack up more than 550,000 sales for the model year, a pretty fair performance for Chrysler’s second-largest division in those days.

It’s interesting to reflect here how the Dodge lineup for ’70 was heavily populated with  image and performance models. The Dart Swinger 340, Coronet R/T, Coronet Super Bee, Charger, and Challenger were all playing to the muscle car crowd in one way or another. Together they accounted for close to 150,000 sales, around 27 percent of the division’s total volume. And naturally, that’s what Dodge in that era is remembered for by collectors today: muscle cars.

We can also see that Chrysler was getting plenty of mileage out of its mid-sized B-body platform, as the Coronet, R/T, Super Bee, and Charger were all based on the trusty B-body package. Of course, the Challenger’s E-body shell was a B-body variant, while over at Chrysler’s Plymouth division, the B-body had proliferated in a similar way. (See our feature on the B-body’s ingenious origin here.) But lest we forget, the family haulers from Dodge—Dart compact and full-sized Polara/Monaco—are represented here as well, and it’s all tied together with a catchy jingle, “You belong in a Dodge.” Video below.
