Video: The GM LeSabre and Buick XP-300 Dream Cars in Action

GM LeSabre and Buick XP-300 conceptsHere’s rare factory footage of two 1951 General Motors dream cars in action: The GM LeSabre and the Buick XP-300.

In 1951, General Motors introduced two radical new show cars to the public: the GM LeSabre and the Buick XP-300. The more famous of the two, the LeSabre (which is not a Buick, though the division did later adopt the model name), has been called the most important concept vehicle in GM history, but both cars were loaded with the freshest ideas and technology GM could summon, including exotic, all-aluminum supercharged V8s.

In this video, we are shown a few of the LeSabre’s special features, namely the hidden headlights, automatic convertible top, onboard jacking system, and fuel filler hidden in the left tail fin. The LeSabre then heads out on the test track at the Milford Proving Ground, where it is joined by the XP-300 for a spin on the high-speed oval. Here’s a rare glimpse of a pair of very special cars—enjoy.

  1. Beautiful 1950’s designs both. Maybe a little on the futuristic side, but that’s what factory show cars represent, ideas for future cars. The hidden gas filler was used in 56 & 57 by Chevy, hidden headlights in the 60’s on Corvettes and Impalas and Camaros. Don’t think the self-jacking idea ever caught on though.

  2. Back when automobiles had a look that expressed a hope and optimism for the future, instead if looking like rolling jelly beans like today’s cars.

Am I right that both of these are Harley Earl creations ?

    • Quite right. He supervised the design of both cars, with Buick chief engineer C.A. Chayne supervising the mechanical end.
