Video: The 1936 All-American Soap Box Derby

Soap Box FinishPresenting a priceless piece of Americana: a newsreel report on the 1936 Soap Box Derby from Akron, Ohio.

The first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton, Ohio in 1933, the creation of Dayton Daily News photographer Myron Scott. By 1936 the event was becoming an American institution, gaining a major sponsor, Chevrolet, and a purpose-built gravity racing course in Akron, Ohio constructed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Known as Derby Downs, this facility continues to host the event to this day.

This short reel, produced by Chevrolet’s favorite film company, the Jam Handy Organization, records the 1936 event. We’re not Derby authorities by any means, but we gather that this is the oldest complete film record of a Soap Box Derby event available. Awards included a brand new Chevrolet Coach and the grand prize, a four-year scholarship to the state university of the winner’s choice.

There’s plenty of fascinating material here, but we were especially drawn to the creativity and imagination of the boy race car fabricators. Truly, these were more innocent times—in a number of ways. Enjoy the video.

  1. Growing up in Akron, I remember All-American week as a grand community celebration when the eyes of the world were truly on our little city. The event has through its ups and downs and, as MCG notes, those were simpler times, but it’s great to see the Derby on the upswing again.

  2. I had heard about the Derby growing up, but had never participated or seen it. Sometime in the late 90s I was making a tour of the Midwest including Indianapolis and the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum (fantastic place!).

I stumbled upon the Indiana finals for the Derby and was astounded by the sophistication of the cars. Got some great pictures and experienced one of the great American events. I’ve been back to the Speedway but I miss having the time and money to spend a few weeks to mosey through the back roads.

  3. my daughter raced from 2007 to 2011
2010 was her best year ! winning the Michigan Race to get her trip to Akron
and was also the National Derby Rally Points Champion

sadly Detroit no longer holds its own race if anyone out there is willing to help me organize it let me know

  4. Even after watching the video, I’m unsure who the participants were. Was it boys?

I never participated as I had discovered internal combustion motivation by age 8, in the form of a go-cart and later a mini bike.
