Who wouldn’t want to travel the entire state of Oklahoma in a brand-new 1964 Malibu Super Sport? We know we would.
In this 1964 marketing campaign, Joel Aldred—the voice of Chevrolet himself—invites us to tour Oklahoma, a “state of contrasts.” Our vehicle for checking out the Sooner State (Labor omnia vincit) is the Chevrolet Chevelle, but with a special focus on the Malibu Super Sport. The SS is “built to thrive on great chunks of distance,” the Canadian broadcaster explains. “And when you’re headed to the horizon, here’s a car that gets you there in a hurry,” he adds.”It’s a great highway performer.” (See our feature on the new-for-1964 Chevelle here.)
For its 1964 introduction, the Chevelle SS was not quite what it would soon become, a hairy big-block muscle car. Here, it’s more of a sporty family tourer. Nonetheless, the ’64 Super Sport was a capable performer with a solid assortment of available engines, from a 283 cubic-inch, two-barrel V8 with 195 hp to the 327 cubic-inch L74 V8 with a 10.5: compression ratio, a four-barrel carburetor, and 300 hp at 4,400 rpm. The L74 combination was relatively rare in ’64 as it didn’t enter production until June, late in the model year. Video below.
“Great CHUNKS of distance!” lol
My biggest regret in life is that I’ve never been able to see Oklahoma. Unfortunately I never owned a 64 Chevelle, so I was turned away at the state border. My Plymouth was deemed unsuitable for operation on Oklahoma highways. Advertising, then and now, is such ridiculous nonsense.
Relax Barry.
I’ve never been to heaven, but I’ve been to Oklahoma.
