Video: Parnelli Jones and Bobby Unser remember Andy Granatelli

Andy Granatelli was one of the great characters in American motorsports. Here are two more characters, Parnelli Jones and Bobby Unser, with some memorable stories about Andy.

Legendary STP spokesman and Indy car owner Andy Granatelli played key roles in the Indy 500 careers of both Bobby Unser and Parnelli Jones—Unser at the beginning of his Indy career, and Jones as he was nearing the end. Bobby, a three-time Indy winner,  got his first competitive ride at the Speedway in 1963 with Granatelli’s aging but powerful Novi, and Parnelli’s final Indy 500 ride was the amazing STP Paxton turbine car of 1967. Both those stories and more are found in this little gem of a video, produced by the crew at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Unfortunately, Granatelli is no longer with us. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 90, while this video was produced in 2010. We hadn’t thought of it quite this way before, but at around the six-minute mark in the video, Parnelli notes that Granatelli, known mainly for his shameless self-promotion, made a huge contribution to the Speedway and the Indy 500. With his flamboyant STP suits, creative PR antics, and network TV campaigns for STP oil treatment, Andy made Indianapolis in May part of America’s national conversation in the ’60s. Granatelli was a memorable character, and these two great drivers share a few of the memories here.

  1. Wow, 100 Grand just to drive in the race. I believe the winners purse was $170K that year. Great stories thanks for the article.
