Video: Marketing the 1957 Ford

This original Ford Motor Company spot presents the all-new passenger car lineup for 1957, celebrating a banner year for the blue oval brand.

REVISED AND EXPANDED—The 1957 model year was a memorable one for Ford fans. Although the ’57 Chevy is one of the most celebrated cars in the collector world, it was in 1957 that Ford surpassed Chevrolet, on paper at least, as the number one seller in America. Actually, this was not a totally rare occurrence in the annual sales wars of the era, as the two automakers jockeyed for position (and juggled their calendar and model year sales figures) to claim the number one spot. The competition was fairly tight, with Ford also edging Chevy in 1949, 1954, 1961, and 1966.

This commercial spot ticks off the advanced features of the all-new ’57 model line, including a perimeter frame and 14-inch wheels, two improvements that allowed the Ford styling studio to create a significantly lower and sleeker profile than the boxier, more vertical ’55-’56 body package. An expanded engine lineup included a 312 CID Thunderbird V8 with a centrifugal supercharger, a combination good for 300 hp, and the fresh sheet metal sported a distinctive rear-opening hood.

Although it’s not shown here, the Skyliner, Ford’s retractable convertible with all-metal roof, was also introduced in ’57. Other noteworthy body styles included the sporty two-door Ranch Wagon pictured above. All in all, it was a banner year for the blue oval brand. We like this spot for the segment featuring a rolling chassis, minus its body, tooling down the highway. Video below.

  1. Regarding the segment featuring the chassis minus the body rolling down the highway, it is really odd to see the u-joint spinning on the front of the rear differential with no driveshaft in place.

This was probably considered a pretty high-tech video in 1957. Thanks for posting it.
