Video: Introducing the 1986 Camaros

Meet the full lineup of 1986 Camaros in this original Chevrolet dealer video.

The 1986 Z28 is “an exotic Camaro that runs with the most advanced high-performance sports coupes in the world,” the announcer declares at the opening of this dealer video. We don’t know about all that, but the Z28 was a solid value for performance-minded shoppers in ’86, sporting a list price of $11,902 (less than half the cost of the Corvette) and a standard LG4 5.0-liter V8 with 155 hp coupled to a Borg-Warner five-speed manual gearbox.

And for just $659 more, buyers could opt for the IROC Z28 package and get distinctive 16-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels, Goodyear VR50 Gatorback tires, and Delco/Bilstien gas shocks at the rear—and the exclusive IROC Z exterior treatment, of course. Both the carbureted L69 5.0L V8 (standard on IROC, optional on Z28) and the fuel-injected LB9 5.0L V8 (optional on both) were rated at 190 hp. Rumors abound that a few IROCs were built with the L98 5.7L V8 in ’86, but it has never been verified.

Along with the Z28 and the IROC Z, also featured here are the rest of the ’86 Camaro models, namely the base Sport Coupe and the personal-luxury Berlinetta. The least expensive Camaro at $9,285, the Sport Coupe was also the most popular with darned near 100,000 units sold that year. (The base model could be had with a 2.5L four, the standard 2.8L V6, or the LG4 V8.) In contrast, the Berlinetta moved fewer than 4.500 units and this would be its final year in the Camaro lineup.
