Video: Falling in Love With the 1964 Chevrolet Impala

In the early ’60s, the auto industry was figuring out that women can enjoy cars, too, as we see in this campaign for the 1964 Chevrolet Impala.

This 1964 Chevrolet spot is a bit forward-leaning for the early ’60s. Clearly, the times where changing. The narrator is a woman, but here she’s not speaking in the role of a mother or a housewife. She’s simply a woman who admires the Impala Sport Coupe for its own sake, for her own personal enjoyment. “What more could a girl ask for,” she asks, “than her own jet smooth Chevrolet for 1964?” She compares the emotions in driving the Impala to falling in love, which might not be so surprising. As we know, it happens all the time with men and cars.

In a less profound way, times were changing from some other angles at Chevrolet in 1964. This would be Chevy’s final year for the controversial X-frame chassis introduced in 1958 (see our feature on the General Motors X-frame era here.)  The creased, convertible-look Sport Coupe roofline that first appeared in 1962 also made its final appearance in ’64, bracketing the ’62-’64 Impala hardtops with their own distinctive look. The big 409 cubic-inch V8 was still on the order books with up to 425 hp, though most buyers opted for the 283 CID and 327 CID small-block V8s. Check out the video below and see if you, too, can fall in love.
