Here’s Dan Blocker—the beloved Hoss Cartright in the ’60s TV show Bonanza—to pitch the complete Chevrolet truck line for 1964.
Children of the 1960s all remember Bonanza, the popular family western series that aired on NBC television from 1959 to 1973. For much of its 14-year run the show aired on Saturday evenings with Chevrolet as the presenting sponsor, and the bow-tie division often called on the actors who played the beloved Cartright family—Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Michael Landon, and Dan Blocker—to serve as spokespeople in the company’s TV commercials and dealer films, like the 1964 Chevy truck presentation we’re sharing here.
Dan Blocker, who played the middle son and archetypal gentle giant Hoss Cartright in the series, was the natural choice to pitch the company’s trucks. (By the way, Blocker was an enthusiastic car guy himself and the owner of a professional sports car racing team.) This clip features the entire Chevrolet truck line for 1964, from the dinky Corvair 95 van and pickup to the big Class 8 steel-bodied tilt-cab tractor, and we note that the Chevy 409 CID V8 in the M80 dump truck gets special mention. (Read our feature on the 409 here.) These days General Motors is barely in the commercial truck business, but in the ’60s Chevrolet was a major player in the category, and so was its sibling division at GM, GMC Truck and Coach. Who wouldn’t believe every word out of Hoss Cartwright’s mouth? This guy just embodied the word honesty and trustworthiness, thanks to his characterization of Ben Cartwright’s middle son.
I will never forget seeing the image of Hoss Cartwright riding a mini-bike on the cover of Rod & Custom.
