Video: A lap with the 2014 Mercedes F1 Turbo V6

Get your geek on. We’re going for a simulated lap of Monza with the 2014 Mercedes-Benz F1 engine. It turns 15,000 rpm and it’s turbocharged. Oh, and they said you should turn up the sound.

The Mercedes-Benz folks have released this video featuring their new V6 turbo Formula 1 engine. What they did, in a nutshell: Animation from a Mercedes-Benz lap simulator has been synced to a programmed dyno lap of an early V6 development engine.  The idea is to give fans an idea of what the next generation of F1 cars and engines will sound like.

Yes, change is in the air in F1. Teams are switching from the current normally-aspirated 2.4L V8 engines to 1.6L single-turbo powerplants in 2014. Revving to 15,000 rpm, the new units are expected to make roughly equivalent power (in the 600 hp neighborhood) but consume significantly less fuel—some say as much as 35 percent less.

Of course, here we’re focused on the sound. Where the 2.4L V8 firea eight cylinders at 18,000 rpm through a pair of exhaust collectors, the 1.6L V6 fires six cylinders at 15,000 through a single collector and an exhaust turbine. In its exhaust signature, the 2014 engine is a different breed of cat, as the video demonstrates. Quoting Mercedes-Benz: “Best enjoyed with the sound turned up LOUD on headphones or speakers for the full effect.”
