Video: 1968 Chevrolet Caprice on the Streets of San Francisco

A fashion shoot in San Francisco is the setting for this close-up look at the 1968 Chevrolet Caprice.

Since we’re hopeless ’60s car geeks, the very first thing we noticed in this spot for the 1968 Chevrolet Caprice was not the glamorous fashion model but the hideaway headlamps. A $79 option available only on the top-of the-line Caprice that year, the concealed headlamps (vacuum-operated headlamp covers, actually) give the full-size Chevrolet a remarkably different look.

We won’t call the concealed lamps an especially rare option as nearly 15,000 cars were so equipped, but it’s seldom seen today. The two-door Custom Coupe is also equipped with the optional, Corvette-style Rally Wheels ($21.10), so this Caprice has a sportier vibe than most. Rear fender skirts ($26.35) were also available, but thankfully (in our opinion) that box on the order sheet wasn’t checked here.

The full-sized Chevrolets for ’68 featured a lengthy option list indeed, up to and including a 427 cubic-inch V8, but the hardware details aren’t explored here. Instead, the scene is a women’s fashion shoot in San Francisco, setting up the opportunity for some close-up views of the exterior styling and the luxurious Caprice cabin. At $3,219, around $200 more than an Impala Cusom Coupe, Caprice buyers got a fair amount of glamor for their dollar, and we can see it all in the video below.

  1. If I had a time machine I would go back and order one with a 427 and a 4 speed. Rare then, even more today.
