Video: 1962 London Motor Show

Live from Earl’s Court in London in bold, beautiful Technicolor, here’s the 1962 British International Motor Show as presented by British Pathé News. See the glory that was the British motor industry here.

While the historical focus here at Mac’s Motor City Garage is primarily on the Detroit auto industry, we’re regular car enthusiasts like everyone else, too. So naturally, we retain our fascination for the classic years of the British motoring world—truly, it was a special time with special cars. In this beautiful color newsreel feature from British Pathé News, originally screened in movie theaters throughout the Empire, we’re treated to deluxe coverage of the 1962 British Motor Show at Earl’s Court in London, and there’s quite a lot to see.

Here are some great looks at the Ford Cortina and the Triumph Spitfire, both brand new in ’62, and a segment with famed car guy Lord Montagu inspecting the nearly new Jaguar E-Type. British film director Val Guest and wife Yolande Donlan check out a beautifully detailed Mini Cooper show car, and there are some wonderful bits from the Rover and Bentley stands at Earl’s Court as well. As always, we’re grateful to British Pathé for preserving and sharing these priceless historical artifacts. Enjoy the video.

  1. The Elan for 1962 was so far ahead of all those other little British sports cars. What a shame the major manufacturers didn’t share the same enthusiasm to develop their offerings throughout the sixties and seventies. Nice film, though.
