Time-Lapse Engine Rebuild: Buick 401 Nailhead V8

The Redline Rebuild guys are at it again. Here’s their latest time-lapse engine overhaul, a Buick Nailhead V8.

With its handsome looks and unique engineering, the 1953-66 Buick Nailhead is one of our all-time favorite Detroit V8s, We know it’s probably a favorite of yours, too. Our history of the Nailhead at Mac’s Motor City Garage (“Secrets of the Buick Nailhead V8,” March 3, 2016) is one of our most frequently viewed features. Evidently, the crew at Hagerty Insurance are fans of the Nailhead as well, as they chose a 401 CID Buick for the latest chapter in their Redline Rebuild series.

Time-lapse video engine overhauls are now a thing, thanks to the internet, and nobody does them better than the Hagerty team. This example turned out to be a special challenge–its condition was about as nasty as you will find in a scrapyard piece, and the original block and heads could not be saved. Fortunately, replacement cores were quickly found and swapped into place, ensuring another top-quality overhaul. Through the magic of stop-motion photography, here’s a complete engine rebuild in eight minutes, with great detail shots of the Buick V8’s distinctive internals. Enjoy.
