Saturday Morning CarTune: Route 66 by Diana Krall and Natalie Cole

Here’s the perfect morning jazz groove to fall into: Natalie Cole and Diane Krall in their killer duet performance of “Route 66.”

Thanksgiving was a few weeks ago, but MCG is thankful for this: That here in the age of twerking and Auto-Tune, we can still hear real music—lots of it, in every genre. Take for example this gorgeous rendition of “Route 66” by two exceptional musicians, Diane Krall and Natalie Cole.

The perfectly-pitched Cole, of course, is the daughter of Nat King Cole, who made the song famous, while Krall is one of the top jazz singers and pianists performing today, and the two are serial collaborators.

As regular visitors know, “Route 66” is practically the official song at Mac’s Motor City Garage: This makes the fifth time the ultimate American car song has been featured here, and we’re not done yet. This Krall/Cole version is faithful to both the Nat King Cole cover and the Bobby Troup original, and the performance can be found on Cole’s 2002 live DVD, Ask a Woman Who Knows. This is real music. Enjoy.
