Saturday Morning CarTune: Route 66

Route 66 2013They’re back!  Here’s Asleep at the Wheel with an all-new, even tastier version of “Route 66.”

If Mac’s Motor City Garage had an official song, it would have to be the Bobby Troup classic, “Route 66.” We’ve featured it as a CarTune five times—including the benchmark Nat King Cole version and a cool, cool jazz rendition by Troup himself. And just for good measure, we threw in Nelson Riddle’s TV theme tribute.

And if the Garage had a favorite band, it might be Asleep at the Wheel. We’ve featured them here multiple times, too, including with a previous version of “Route 66.” However, this band just keeps playing finer and tighter every year. When we heard this latest performance of “Route 66” recorded by Austin public radio station KUTX in the summer of 2013, there is no way on earth we could pass it up. It’s just too good. Here’s some of the best country swing you’ve ever heard. Just listen.

    • That was my first thought too, Myron – “What, Route 66 AGAIN?” But you’re right, it really is amazing. These guys are almost sickeningly talented.

  1. ~ Got to see Ray and the boys several times, most memorable was the Roof Garden of the Chase Park Plaza here in St Louis. Fewer than 400 tickets sold. What a show, danced til we dropped !!
