+   The German government has approved diesel engines produced by General Motors’ Opel division following initial doubts about their legality, the German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported. More at Reuters. 

+   Detroit-based supplier American Axle reports that earnings rose 21 percent in the second quarter to $71 million and projects $4 billion in sales for 2016. More at The Detroit News. 

+   Daimler AG will invest $1.1 billion in a second Mercedes-Benz passenger car plant in Hungary that will be completed in 2020 and employ 2,500 workers. More at Automotive News Europe. 

+   Driver Anthony Craig Owen, 38, was killed and a spectator was injured when his race car lost control and went off track at Ware Shoals Dragway in South Carolina. More at WNCN.com. 

+   Singapore’s transport authority and Delphi Automotive are developing a small test fleet of fully autonomous vehicles for the public transit system. More at the Detroit Free Press. 

+   According to a leaked ordering guide, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will boast 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque from its 6.2-liter supercharged V8. More at Autoblog.

+   Aparecida Schunck, the mother-in-law of Formula 1 czar Bernie Ecclestone, was rescued by Brazilian police and two men were arrested in a reported kidnapping plot. More at Motorsport.com. 

+   New vehicle sales in the U.S. should remain strong through 2016 and come close to 2015’s industry record of 17.5 million, says Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. More at USA Today.

+   At the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum during Monterey Classic Car Week, a seminar called The Racing Legacy of the Ford GT40 will feature panelists Dan Gurney, Chris Amon, Jacky Ickx, and Brian Redman. More at Hemmings Daily.

    Bernie Eddlestone most certainly wanted a large ransom to take back his mother-in-law.
