From Chevrolet With Love: GM’s Bizarre 1966 Promotional Film

Strangest car promo ever? This 1966 dealer movie for the Chevelle SS396 will have you laughing one moment, scratching your head the next. Watch this, if you dare.

This 1966 Chevrolet promotional film pretty much defies description, but we’re going to give it a shot. Produced by Jam Handy to market the Chevelle SS396, Chevy’s entry in the intermediate muscle car wars for ’66 this eight-minute movie is entitled From Chevrolet With Love, and it was crafted as either a send-up or a ripoff (you decide) of the campy spy movies that were so popular in the ’60s. The main characters include Dr. Yes and James Bland—get it? This could be the least subtle movie parody in history, and it was presented both as a stand-alone item and as part of a feature-length Chevy dealer film called Impact ’66.

We’d like to say the film is so bad it’s good, but in truth it’s just really bad. But as with many train wrecks, you can’t turn away. The awfulness is fascinating. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll groan out loud. And as compensation, there’s some nice exposition footage of the Chevelle SS396, as well as its chief competitors in 1966, including the Pontiac GTO and Ford Fairlane GT, in some aceleration and braking tests. Video below.

  1. Strange to say the least, but then, that was back in the 60s when a lot of things got strange. It was the James Bond and Matt Helm era and EVERYTHING went. I have to say that, given a choice, I’d take the SS396 over an Aston Martin DB5…

  2. Interesting detail to mention, they didn’t compared the Chevelle SS396 with the Dodge Coronet and Plymouth Belvedere Satellite with the 383ci V8 or 426 Hemi in this film.
