A visit to the Walter P. Chrysler Museum

When you’re in the Detroit area, the Walter P. Chrysler Museum is worth a day’s visit. And if you’re not in Detroit, it might well be worth a road trip. The WPC is considered one of the top car museums in America.

Located in Auburn Hills, Michigan, just a stone’s throw from Chrysler world headquarters, the WPC is fairly diverse for a one-make auto museum due to the automaker’s
complicated family tree. Along with the Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler vehicles, you’ll also find Ramblers, Hudsons, and Willys-Overlands. Commercial and military vehicles and products are also well-represented. Along with the vehicles there are some imaginative static displays representing Walter P’s office and workshop, a well-stocked gift shop, and the Viper Cafe in the basement offering light fare.

The museum has more vehicles available than it can display at any one time, so the exhibits are rotated on a regular basis.  You can check in at the WPC Museum’s website to learn about special exhibits and other events. The museum is active in the collector car community, hosting a number of cruises and car club events throughout the year. Hours are 10AM to 5PM Tuesday through Saturday and 12PM to 5PM Sunday (closed Monday and holidays).

Here’s a slide show including some of the cars, trucks, and other stuff on display during MCG’s most recent tour in April 2012. Please enjoy.

NOTE – In December of 2012, the Walter P. Chrysler Museum was officially closed to the public. Click here for a photo essay of the final day.

  1. Fine story and the photos are excellent. As a car enthusiast this is my kind of material. I’ve been hoping for a website like this. More please.

  2. It was a great museum, but sadly, it is no longer open to the public. Private tours arranged in advance for groups, but no more walk-ins.

  3. Thanks Bill for sharing your great photos and info on the Walter P. Chrysler Musuem.
FYI. The Musuem will be once again open to the public during the day of our 26th Annual CEMA Charity car show June 6, 2015. See you then!
