Video: The story of the GM Milford Proving Ground

GM Milford PGJust northwest of Detroit is one of the greatest automotive test facilities in the world: the General Motors Milford Proving Ground. Here’s an excellent video on its 90-year history.

Alfred P. Sloan, GM’s visionary CEO, is remembered today for his matchless organizational and finance skills, but he was originally an engineer. Early on, he recognized the need to get vehicle testing off public roads and onto dedicated facilities, and in 1924, the company opened the Milford Proving Ground, the industry’s first facility of its kind. Now, 90 years later, the Milford PG covers more than 4000 acres with 130 miles of roadway, and is home to nearly 5000 engineers and technicians working in more than 100 buildings. (See a similar video feature on Chrysler’s Chelsea Proving Grounds here,)

This rare video is a few years old, as you will see. At this precise instant in time, Bob Lutz was still product vice president and the Chevy Volt was just nearing introduction. That might date the clip a bit for corporate purposes, but it’s perfect for us. Here is both a great historical survey of the Proving Ground and a special look at all the technological marvels inside. Enjoy the video.

  1. Neil B. Ketchum…Worked at the Proving Grounds for 21 years, retiring in 2001. Very interesting video.. Would like to know if they still have an “Open House” in September like they did in years gone by??

  2. I own the 1970 Camaro VIN 123870N500001 that spent time there prior to going to Smokey Yunick’s shop.
Anyone have any info on that car?
