Video: The 1970 Ford Drag Team in Action

Here’s some real old-school drag racing. In this 1970 clip, see the stars of the Ford Drag Team in action: Hubert Platt, Ed Terry, and Dick Loehr

REVISED AND EXPANDED — The Ford Drag Team members for 1970 are the stars of this short FoMoCo promotional clip. But first, a little background: By the end of the 1960s, Ford’s drag racing efforts had backed away from the all-out nitro funny cars and dragsters toward more production-based categories, including Super Stock and Pro Stock. Meanwhile, select factory-backed racers adopted a drag clinic format similar to the popular programs launched by Chrysler’s Dodge and Plymouth brands. On the Ford Drag Team, Southern match racing legend Hubert Platt represented the East Coast, California racer Ed Terry covered the West Coast, and Lansing, Michigan’s Dick Loehr freelanced the Midwest with his familiar Stampede race cars.

The clip is noteworthy, we think, for the great little personality sketches of the drivers. In fact, we wish the bio segments were a bit longer, as all three racers were standouts in the golden age of Super Stock and match-bash competition. There’s also some sweet on-track, gear-grabbing action, much of it filmed at the season-opening NHRA WInternationals in Pomona, California, just east of Los Angeles. Enjoy the ride.
