Courtesy of British Pathé, here’s all the latest news from the 1955 London Motor Show at Earls Court.
We always enjoy sharing these old British Pathé newsreel reports on the classic auto shows of the past, especially those that feature the London Auto Show at Earls Court in London. If you’re a student of the automobile, we know you’ll lean right in. In 1955, when this news feature was produced, the London show—more properly known as the British International Auto Show—was not just the major auto industry event in Britain, it was one of the most important auto shows in the world.
The major stories at Earls Court for ’55 included the new Jaguar 2.4 Litre, the first Jag with unit construction, the thoroughly up-to-date MGA, and the revolutionary Citroen DS. The new Citroen marked “another departure from long-established tradition,” says the announcer with typical British understatement. Also on display, and looking a bit like a fish out of water, is the fabulous Cadillac La Espada—on hiatus, we presume, from the GM Motorama circuit. Video below.
I’m trying to remember the last show I attended with two intros as big as the MGA and the Citroen DS19. I can’t think of one.
