Video: The 1955 GM Motorama in Color

The 1955 Motorama was surely one of the greatest ever, with a hall-of-fame lineup of General Motors dream cars. See them all here in color.

This short GM film on the 1955 Motorama packs a ton of great cars and history into just four minutes. Six fabulous and now famous GM dream cars from ’55 are featured: LaSalle II, Chevrolet Biscayne, Pontiac Strato-Star, Oldsmobile Delta, Buick Wildcat III, and Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.

Obviously, GM styling vice president Harley Earl and his talented team of designers and technicians were busy that year. It’s difficult to imagine any automaker today launching so many original concept vehicles in a single season. For the estimated two million visitors to the Motorama that year, it must have been almost too much to take in.

Also featured here are several new developments in production cars. In ’55, GM introduced a new body style, the four-door pillarless hardtop, on Buick and Oldsmobile. In the following year, the other GM divisions (and the rest of  the Motor City’s carmakers) joined the trend. The wrap-around windshield, another Harley Earl pet project, went company-wide at GM  in ’55, the film notes. Also included here are GM’s two new sport-luxury station wagons, the Chevy Nomad and Pontiac Safari. All these mid-century automotive wonders are showcased in the video below.
