Video: Rod Serling Introduces the 1971 Ford LTD

Famed television writer and producer Rod Serling was the spokesman for this campaign demonstrating the quietness of the 1971 Ford LTD.

Rod Serling (1924-75) is best remembered for his groundbreaking television series, The Twilight Zone, which originally aired on CBS from 1959 to 1964 and will probably continue in reruns forever. But before that, he was a prolific and highly regarded writer for high-toned TV dramas including Playhouse 90 and Kraft Television Theatre, and he even dabbled successfully in ad writing. We suppose the advertising experience was useful when he did a memorable series of commercials in 1971 for the Ford Motor Company. These spots thoughtfully explored the need for quiet in our modern lives—which could be found behind the wheel of a Ford LTD, of course.

Quietness was a continuing theme in Ford’s messaging for its full-size car line, starting back in 1965 when the Dearborn carmaker boldly declared that the LTD was quieter than a Rolls-Royce. For 1971 the LTD was bigger and more refined than ever with a 121-inch wheelbase, an overall length of nearly 19 feet, and an optional 429 cubic-inch V8. For buyers seeking even more luxury, there was an LTD Brougham with upgraded upholstery and exterior trim. We don’t know if Serling wrote his Ford “quiet” commercials himself,  but given their clarity and economy of words, we wouldn’t be surprised. Video below.

  1. This is a great commercial. I’m glad Serling didn’t use his famous catchphrase, “Submitted for your approval…” That would have spoiled it.

  2. Too bad they aren’t made anymore. All of them had a serene, cloud-like ride. My ’85 CV police vehicle lasted over 300K miles.
