Revisit the life and times of Bobby Unser, one of the true greats of American auto racing, in this moving and fitting tribute from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
When we reflect on the life of Bobby Unser, who passed away this week at the age of 87, naturally we think of his tremendous accomplishments in racing: three Indy 500 victories in 1968, 1975, and 1981; two USAC championship titles in 1968 and 1974, 12 victories at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the venue that became known as Unser’s Mountain. But above and beyond all these accomplishments we reflect on the man himself, who displayed a love of life and of racing that was second to none.
Here was truly a larger-than-life personality, as millions of Americans saw for themselves watching his second career as an ABC, ESPN, and NBC racing commentator. The television screen seemed too small to hold him as he offered up his salty humor and often unbridled opinions. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has assembled this short tribute that includes observations from his family, Al Unser Sr. and Al Unser Jr., and his peers, including A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Gordon Johncock. Great racers will come and go in the sport, but there will only be one Bobby Unser. Video below.
Another great one sadly leaves us. RIP Mr Unser.
