Video: NASCAR Convertibles on the Daytona Beach Course, 1956

See the legendary Curtis Turner and the powerhouse factory Ford team beat up on the field in the inaugural NASCAR convertible race at Daytona Beach in 1956.

This neat little four-minute film, produced for the Ford Motor Company, chronicles the first official event for the NASCAR Convertible division, which was held on the original Daytona Beach course on February 25, 1956. The convertibles raced for only four seasons under official NASCAR auspices, but they produced some memorable races, including this one. A full field of 45 cars started the 160-mile event on the treacherous 4.1-mile road course—half sand, half pavement—which saw Curtis Turner win by an entire lap.

That year, Turner was driving for the powerful Ford factory-backed team managed by Pete De Paolo, winner of the 1925 Indy 500. Early in the film, that’s De Paolo we see in a red sweater vest interacting with Turner and his teammates, Fireball Roberts and Joe Weatherly. Turner laid down an astonishing performance in the NASCAR ragtops in ’56, driving in 42 of the 47 events and winning 22 of them, including 9 of the last 11 races. (But oddly, he lost the season title to Bob Wellborn, who won just three races but completed more laps.) On the Daytona beach course on this day, nobody could lay a glove on Turner. Video below.
