Check out the entire full-sized line from Ford for 1964 in this long-form dealer promotional film.
The 1964 model year continued a major shift in messaging from the Ford Motor Company. Now the theme was “Total Performance,” as the Dearborn automaker pressed its aggressive campaign to conquer the Indy 500, NASCAR, drag racing, and Le Mans. There hasn’t really been a more ambitious factory motorsports program from a Motor City automaker before or since. Of course, the goal was not to produce and sell race cars to the general public, but to reshape the public image of the blue oval brand. Now the focus was on performance, youth, and excitement.
In this dealer presentation for the 1964 full-size product line, the new message is on full display: It’s full of young people in high spirits, going places and having fun. There were four trim levels in the big Fords for 1964, from bottom to top: Custom, Custom 500, Galaxie, and at the top of the heap, the sporty Galaxie 500XL with its gorgeous center console and shell-type bucket seats. As the film mentions, the engine and transmission options were plentiful, from the trusty 223 CID straight six to the fearsome 427 CID V8, which could be had with a single Holley four-barrel carb and 410 hp or dual four-barrels and 425 hp. Cars with the dual-quad Super High Performance 427, also known as the “R code” V8, are highly prized by collectors today, needless to say. Video below.
The 63 1/2 and 64 Galaxies had the coolest interiors in the industry of that time. And the Thunderbirds too.
