Check out this nicely produced color film presenting the fabulous new 1960 Ford Starliner.
Back in July of 2021 here at Mac’s Motor City Garage, we shared the story of the one-year-only ’60 Fords with their unique Quicksilver styling theme (see the feature here). Some time later, we found this nicely produced color film featuring Ford’s fabulous new two-door hardtop for 1960, the Starliner. With its dramatic fastback roofline and delicate C pillars, the Starliner was a sensation of the 1960 season, and naturally, we had to share.
The Starliner was one of two models in a super-deluxe variation of the Galaxie called the Galaxie Special, the other being the Sunliner Convertible. These two featured full Galaxie trim and equipment, while a gold-tone Starliner or Sunliner emblem replaced the Galaxie script on the deck lid. And for the Starliner, there were three stylized chrome stars on each swooping C pillar. Curiously, the fastback greenhouse lasted only through ’61, as Ford went in an entirely different direction for ’62 with a boxy, formal-look hardtop. (The un-aerodynamic ’62 roofline led to the notorious Starlift fiberglass top caper in NASCAR, a story in itself.)
As the clip below mentions, the power choices for ’60 included the 352 cubic-inch Thunderbird Special V8 engine, but it doesn’t mention an even hotter mill, the Thunderbird Super V8. Sporting a solid-lifter cam and special cylinder heads, valves, and valve springs, this 352 pumped out 360 hp and was one of the most powerful engines from Detroit that year. And now, complete with Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance serving as theme music, here is the 1960 Starliner. Video below.
The music most associated with plate spinners on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was a bit of overkill for this film..just my opinion.
Plate juggling, safer than sword juggling.
I’m 99% certain that was filmed on the Taconic State Parkway in NY. They must have had a permit for the truck – they are strictly forbidden to this day.
Thanks, I was very curious about the location.
Passed without signaling.
The 360 hp 352 was called the “Po-lease motor” by my uncle that owned a red ’60 Starliner (early & mid 60’s). His had a 3 speed with overdrive and 4.11 rear. That car started my love for hi-po Ford products.
