Video: Inside the Morgan Motor Company factory

Morgan ash bodyworkThere’s an ancient auto plant in England where time seems to stand still: Morgan of Malvern Link. Here’s a brand new video tour of the Pickersleigh Road factory, in operation for more than a century.

The work spaces are spotless and brightly lit, and the tools are right up to date, but the factory and the methods are as old as the automobile industry. This is the Morgan Motor Company of Malvern Link, England. Morgan has been building its quirky and charismatic sports cars (both three and four-wheeled) here since approximately 1909, and while the company has had its ups and downs through the decades, these days the facility runs a full production schedule and is capable of more than 700 vehicles per year.

The Morgan factory—actually a maze of 10 ancient buildings, as we will see—shares little with modern auto assembly plants. The approach and methods used here are essentially those you’ll find today in a prototype or custom shop. These are hand-built cars, constructed more or less one at a time, starting with their ash-framed, hand-formed aluminum bodies.

This new video, titled This Is How We Do It and featuring many of the company’s own craftsmen as narrators, shows the entire process—and the film is so fascinating and informative you’ll probably want to view it multiple times. 1. I’ve always thought Morgans were very cool, ever since I saw my first one as a kid in the 60’s….

  2. Great video. Takes me back to my visit a few years ago with a group from Delaware Valley Triumphs. I particularly remember wandering round unescorted and being able to speak with all the people doing their particular jobs. As well as seeing the unique wooden frame of course, I was particularly interested to see the bonnet (hood) being formed from a sheet of metal.

  3. Very nice to see the old ways of producing today Morgans in the old way with new and improved methods. The tradition still stands with the Morgans that we all cherish and still are made by hand . A Morgan is merely that enjoy it or go on to more important things like butterfly collecting as a Morgan is a butterfly ” In the Wind ” . My salute to those that make the Morgan possible in these modern times . Sincerely , best to you Gentlemen and Ladies that do so . John H. Sheally !!
