See how camshafts are made in this fast-paced video produced by Comp Cams.
Started in 1976 and incorporated in 1977, Competition Cams Inc. — most folks know the outfit simply as Comp Cams — must be the largest performance camshaft company in the USA, probably in the world. Founders John McWhirter, Ivars Smiltniks, Tom Woitesek, and Bob Woodard, followed by more recent owners Ron Coleman and Paul Brothers, brought an engineering-based approach to the camshaft and valvetrain game, becoming an industry leader in both technology and sales. Recently the cam maker and its parent company, Competition Performance Group, acquired a new owner, Industrial Opportunity Partners, the same private equity firm that owns Edelbrock LLC.
On the Comp Cams YouTube channel you can find all kinds of great technical videos, including neat stuff like how to properly degree a cam and demonstrations of the Spintron valvetrain analyzer. This brand new video is a fast-paced 14-minute exposition of the Comp Cams manufacturing process. Like a lot of things in the car biz, cam grinding has come a long way in the past few decades, and here’s the perfect opportunity to see what’s going on today. Video below.
Very good presentation. A person doesn’t realize how much is involved in the manufacture of a camshaft until you see it up close and personal. Thanks for posting…
Nice video. I would like to learn more about cam lobe design. Surely that is another whole subject in itself. I hope they do a video.
