Video: General Motors Dream Cars in Action

GM Firebird IIREVISED AND EXPANDED—This great little film provides us with a rare sight: dozens of General Motors’ most familiar dream cars—from the Buick Y-Job to the Mako Shark to the Pontiac Banshee—on the road. Fascinating stuff, watch.

We’ve seen these well-known GM concept cars before. In still photos, anyway. Now here’s a chance to see them in motion pictures, on the highway and at auto shows including the fabled Motorama. The action provides an added dimension, brings these famed vehicles to life. The video begins, naturally enough, with the 1938 Buick Y-Job and the 1953 GM LeSabre, and closes with the 1988 Pontiac Banshee IV.

Along the way, we see some great footage of the Firebird I, Firebird II, and Firebird III turbine cars, several Corvette experimental cars, and the Buick XP-300 as well. And there are some relatively obscure concept vehicles, too:

+   At 59 seconds, the 1955 Buick Wildcat III dream car in bright lipstick red. Many of its styling features appeared on 1956 and 1957 Buick production cars, most notably the dramatic checkmark side trim.

+   At 1:50, the 1954 Cadillac El Camino, a close-coupled coupe that first appeared at the 1954 GM Motorama at the Waldorf Astoria. While it never made production, the tail fins found their way to some Cadillac models, and the name was borrowed for Chevy’s passenger car-based pickup in 1959.

+   At 3:54, the 1959 Cadillac Cyclone, a two-seat sports roadster with unique hardware including independent rear suspension with Hydramatic transaxle. The black housings where headlights might be are radar cones, foreshadowing today’s autonomous driving technology. The Cyclone now resides in the GM Heritage Collection.

While you’re watching, grab a pencil and see how many of these fabulous dream cars you can identify. There’s no prize, we hasten to add. Knowing your car lore is its own reward. Video below.
