Video: Dan Gurney Pitches the Total Performance 1964 Ford

From Daytona International Speedway, here’s All-American racing hero Dan Gurney to sell you a brand-new 1964 Ford Galaxie.

Dan Gurney (1931-2018) is one of America’s most beloved race drivers. While he never managed to win a big one on the ovals at Daytona or Indianapolis, America’s greatest races, he was celebrated for his tremendous versatility. The son of an Metropolitan Opera singer, Gurney grew up immersed in Southern California hot rod culture and soon demonstrated he could race anything, from heavyweight NASCAR stockers to Formula 1 machines. A driver’s driver, he was admired by his peers most of all. And among the fans, he had an uncanny ability—almost Lindbergh-like, and you’ll note the resemblance—to seem like both a superhero and a regular guy at the same time.

Through much of the ’60s, Gurney was closely associated with the Ford Motor Company and its rapidly expanding Total Performance campaign, racing in multiple series across the country and around the world. Part of his duties included wheeling a stock car for the Wood brothers at major NASCAR events, including Riverside (where he dominated in those days) and Daytona, where this spot was produced with famed ABC sports announcer Chris Schenkel.

While here Gurney is singing the praises of the ’64 Galaxie’s comfortable ride, we’ll note that the top engines in the full-size Ford that year included the 427 CID R-code V8 with dual carbs and 425 hp, and its single-four-barrel sibling, the Q-Code 427 rated at 410 hp. The single-carb version was legal for NASCAR, hence the “410 HP” painted on the hoods in this clip. Video follows.

  1. Once upon a time I thought those Ford were ugly and crap!
These days I like them and would buy one [at the right money]
The same with early 60s Falcons and Fairlanes.
As for Dan, from all accounts a very nice man,, and a very good driver.
