We’ve hit the jackpot this time, fellow car spotters. Check out all the sweet vintage automobiles packed into this little two-minute film from West Hollywood in 1963.
There’s no shortage of historic Hollywood landmarks in this westbound cruise down Sunset Boulevard circa 1963. At the 30-second mark on your right, there at the corner of Sunset and Clark, is the famed Whisky A Go Go (here covered in red and blue banners) and right next door, Herb Cohen’s folk music club, the Unicorn. A bit farther down the strip (1:00) is the Largo, a notorious strip joint that later became the Roxy Theater, another well-known launching pad for rock gods and goddesses, and Vincente Minnelli’s Villa Nova Italian restaurant, which today is the Rainbow Bar & Grill.
But never mind the stargazing stuff. We’re here to eyeball all the interesting cars cruising Sunset Boulevard on this beautiful Southern California day. We spotted a fine black ’57 Thunderbird, a ’55 Nomad, a ’46-’48 Ford woody wagon, a baby blue MGA roadster…too many great cars to name them all here. Yes, MCG is old enough to remember when the streets looked pretty much like this. Too bad he didn’t take a camera everywhere he went. Enjoy the video.
Great stuff, and more than just nice cars and buildings; it gives a tiny taste of how life was in 63.
nice, fun video!
Nice video, although I’m not sure why it starts off with the driver running a red light.
Great video! Amazing cars! Does anyone recognize the white 2 door hardtop parked at the curb behind the blue Falcon at 0:39?
It looks like A Borgward Isabella coupe. I also noticed a Vauxhall Victor!
