Video: Building the Tesla 3

Via time-lapse video, here’s a glimpse inside the Tesla production process as a Model 3 glides down the Fremont, California assembly line.

There’s certainly no shortage of opinions about Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Inc., or his latest automotive creation, the Tesla 3 sedan. But then, a number of these opinions have now been proven wrong. Many of the Motor City’s experts said it couldn’t be done—that Musk could never build a car in the huge volume he predicted for the Tesla 3, or in the price range he targeted. But after some highly-publicized starts and stalls, the upstart carmaker is now producing 1,000 vehicles per day, and the Tesla 3 is among the top-five selling sedans in America.

Many Tesla observers, both for and against, would love to get a deep, long gaze inside the company’s 5.3-million sq-ft factory in Fremont, California, a former General Motors plant. Needless to say, the company is quite protective of its technology and processes, so for now, this quick glimpse will have to suffice.  The video is less than a minute long, but with the tools in the lower margin you can slow down the stop-action and take in more details of the process—which is highly automated, as we can see. Video below.

  1. We can see a number of rigs with workers performing tasks while seated on a perch. Is this exclusive to Tesla or industry wide?
