Last month, we told you the story of Studebaker’s giant 1931 President roadster. Now we’ve got some original film footage.
A quick followup: One month ago, Mac’s Motor City Garage featured one of the great automotive PR stunts of all time, Studebaker’s monster 41-ft. President roadster. Constructed entirely from wood, the five-ton giant sat near the front gate of the Studebaker Proving Grounds from 1930 to 1936. You can read the whole story here.
And now, courtesy of Critical Past.com, the historical movie archive, we’ve got a wonderful little silent film short that stars the giant Studebaker live and in person. We’re not certain, but we believe this clip is an outtake from the bizarre 1931 Studebaker promotional film, Wild Flowers. This little vignette, which is delightfully strange its own right, provides great close-up glimpses of the big Stude. (Among other things, we see that the soft pine construction is already deteriorating in the Indiana weather.) The video is short, sweet, and a lot of fun—check it out.
