Video: 1968 British Grand Prix in Color

Siffert 1968 British Grand PrixIn bright, beautiful color, here’s an awesome two-minute newsreel treatment of the 1968 British Grand Prix, won by Jo Siffert. For many, this was the golden age of Formula 1, and as you watch this film you will understand why.

Spoiler alert: In case you’ve been shielding yourself from the news, the 1968 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch was won by Swiss driver Jo Siffert. And a popular victory it was, too, both for the well-regarded Siffert and for his privateer team owner, Rob Walker. An heir to the Johnny Walker liquor fortune, the circumstance that financed his racing exploits, Walker is probably best known to Americans for his droll and insightful race reports each month as the Formula 1 correspondent for Road & Track magazine.

It was at Silverstone in ’68 that Siffert, driving Walker’s Lotus 49B, collected his first F1 victory, outrunning Chris Amon’s Ferrari 312 by a comfortable 4.4 seconds. Alas, Siffert would earn only two Grand Prix victories, his career cut short by a fatal crash at Kent in 1971. This beautiful little newsreel, in bright, vibrant color, is full of wonderful snapshots of the ’60s racing scene. There are glimpses of Gurney, Brabham, and Graham Hill, while a young Prince Charles is seen touring the paddock and the winner’s trophy is presented by Earl Mountbatten. For many, these were the greatest days of Formula 1. Enjoy the video.
