We’ve got a find for you: In vibrant, gorgeous Technicolor, here’s the 1966 British Motor Show featuring all the new models from Britain and Europe for ’66. Enjoy a fascinating moment in British auto history.
The title of this awesome British Pathé News feature on the 1966 British International Motor Show from Earl’s Court is The Big Drive—as in big drive for exports for Great Britain. Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s Labour government was battling to increase exports to offset the growing red ink, and while the British auto industry was fading, it remained a major factor in the nation’s balance of payments.
Longer than the typical newsreel item at six minutes and filmed in glorious Technicolor instead of dreary black & white, the film strives to show the British auto industry in the best possible light. Cars from the Rootes Group (Hillman Imp and Hunter; Singer Chamois and Vogue) receive favored treatment, while the debuts of the new Ford Cortina Mark II and Zodiac Mark IV Executive earn special mention as well. Beautiful cutaways and and other imaginative displays add to the show’s eye appeal, and there’s even a moment or two with the latest non-British models, including the unique Ferrari 365 P Tre Posti. Please enjoy this colorful glimpse of British motor history.
