Video: 1960 Pontiac Exposed!

In this strange old factory film, we get to see the 1960 Pontiac in a whole new way: minus its body, cruising the highways as a chassis alone.

As old factory flims go, this one is pretty strange. To tell their story, first the producers got rid of the car’s body, while the plot, characters, scenes, and dialogue are all off the wall. But we have to admit the approach does get our attention, and it’s an effective way to showcase the technical features of the 1960 Pontiac. Here we are shown the General Motors X-frame chassis in all its glory (the final year for the design at Pontiac) and its three-link rear suspension with saddle-type upper link. The bare-chassis-on-the-road gimmick isn’t new, but we’ve never seen it presented quite this way.

As you may notice right away, this Pontiac is able to cruise along nicely without benefit of an engine or transmission. But no worries, as along the way there’s a stop for lunch and a close-up look at the 389 cubic-inch V8. New for 1960 are disposable fuel and oil filters, while the camshaft and carburetor tuning were also revised. Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that Pontiac used the Carter AFB on its four-barrel models rather than GM’s own Rochester 4GC. Only near the very end do they show us the all-new Pontiac styling for 1960. Video below.

  1. Bizarre. I’m trying to figure out how the thing moved. Electric motors on two of the wheels perhaps? What a crazy concept!

  2. After the driver reads the signs the passenger rubs his face. That was a nice touch.

  3. They gave it a master cylinder, but I don’t think the steering wheel was connected. If it is, they have some “Ginchy-est” steering.
