Video: 1960 Chrysler, The Car of Your Life

Here’s a colorful look at the Chrysler lineup for 1960: Windsor, Saratoga, and New Yorker.

This 1960 Chrysler spot covers a lot of ground in just a few minutes, starting with the glamorous New Yorker Convertible, followed by the mid-level Saratoga sedan, Windsor Sport Coupe, and Town & Country Wagon. Chryslers came in two basic sizes in those days: The Saratoga and New Yorker rode on a 126-inch wheelbase, while the value-priced Windsor shared the Dodge Polara’s 122-inch platform. All three employed the Chrysler Corporation’s Unibody construction, new for 1960.

Mopars of this era were full of novel little features—gimmicks, if you must.  Maybe the most memorable one at the Chrysler division in 1960 was the AstraDome Instrument Center (above) with its jukebox styling and electroluminescent lighting. Developed by Sylvania, powered by an AC inverter, and billed by Chrysler as Panelescent, the EL lighting bathed the instruments in a soft green glow. Naturally, the AstraDome dash is mentioned here. Chrysler’s tagline for 1960 was “the car of your life, for the time of your life.” That’s a fairly tall boast but if nothing else, we bet owners remembered the trick instrument lighting.

Chrysler buyers certainly weren’t wanting for power in 1960. The base engine in the Windsor was a 383 cubic-inch V8 with 305 hp, while the Saratoga got a 383 with 325 hp and the New Yorker was blessed with a standard 413 CID V8 with 350 hp. There was an optional 400 hp V8 with dual four-barrels and ram induction for the mighty 300F sport-luxury cruiser, but it’s the one model that’s not included here. Video below.

    • I love the Chrysler features of the period. You can really see the company trying to differentiate itself.
