Time-Lapse Engine Rebuild: Chevrolet 283 Cubic-Inch V8

Here’s the latest and greatest in the entertaining Redline Rebuild series from Hagerty: a time-lapse overhaul of the beloved Chevy 283 V8.

We’ve shared a number of videos here at Mac’s Motor City Garage from Hagerty’s awesome Redline Rebuild series, which features time-lapse overhauls of some of the great engines in automotive history—from the original Chrysler Hemi V8 to the Model A Ford. All along, we must have known that the Redline Rebuild team would eventually get around to the most popular American engine of all time: the ubiquitous Chevrolet small-block V8.

For this rebuild, the Hagerty crew chose not just any small-block, but arguably the most beloved member of the family: the famed 283 cubic-inch version of 1957-67. With a bore and stroke of 3.875 inches by 3.00 inches, the little 283 could rev for days, and it put the small-block V8 on the map in the high-performance world. This particular engine, according to Hagerty, came out of a 1966 Chevelle convertible, and the shop team used all its powers to make the engine like new again. Meanwhile, the video crew put together some entertaining stop-motion animation scenes in classic George Pal style. Well done, folks. Video below.

  1. Fun movie. I had a 283 in my Austin Healey and it was a great engine. Later I repleaced it with a 350 and it was faster but not as nice. The 283 had the perfect reciprocating mass.
