Britian’s electronic rockers Depeche Mode supply this morning’s CarTune, their signature 1987 version of “Route 66.”
MCG will readily admit he’s not the biggest fan of Depeche Mode or of electronic music in general. He’s more of an American songbook guy, as you’ve probably sussed from the weekly CarTune selections. Still, he can also admit that after several close listenings, Depeche Mode’s version of Route 66 really started to grow on him.
It just goes to show that musical skill is universal, regardless of the artists’ chosen genre. These guys know what they’re doing. And a great song is a great song, “Route 66” being one of the greatest. So far here at the Garage, we’ve featured versions by Nat King Cole, Asleep at the Wheel, and the author himself, Bobby Troup. There are many more worthy interpretations, from Van Morrison’s to the Rolling Stones’, and this Depeche Mode version captures the feel and spirit of Troup’s original as well as any of them. Thumbs up.
However, we’re going to change things up a little for the video. Instead of the band’s official promo, here’s an independent piece by Polish filmmaker Jakub Górajek with a script by Sylwia Górajek, who also stars in front of the camera. The locations they chose for this piece include Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino…well, you know the lyrics. Press play.
Lambrecht Chevy auction next weekend!
Will be very interesting to watch the happening unfold.
My favorite version of this song. Thanks for sharing!
