Saturday morning CarTune: “Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys

Little Deuce CoupeYou knew MCG would get around to this one eventually: The Beach Boys’ definitive  car song, “Little Deuce Coupe.”

This tune is an ideal pick for Woodward Dream Cruise weekend because, as every Motor City gearhead knows, the ’32 Ford pictured on the record sleeve is from Detroit. The wildly customized three-window coupe is Chili Catallo’s SIlver Sapphire, built by Chili with input from the Alexander Brothers and George Barris.

The car still exists today, owned and restored by Curt Catallo, Chili’s son. And to take this story full circle, Curt is the co-owner of the recently opened Vinsetta Garage on Woodward Avenue, currently the Detroit area’s hottest restaurant.

Thankfully, the version of “Little Deuce Coupe” below is not your standard TV lip sync deal but a live concert performance from 1964. Lead singer Mike Love introduces each of the Beach Boys in turn, and then they launch into the song to a full house of screaming teens. Great stuff.

“Little Deuce Coupe”  is an absurdly infectious melody, but it’s not the worst tune to have stuck in your head all day for the Dream Cruise. Please enjoy.
