Saturday morning CarTune: Link Wray’s Draggin’

This morning’s CarTune is provided by the incomparable Link Wray with his hard rocker,  “Draggin.”

Starting with his 1958 smash, “Rumble,” which to innocent ’50s ears must have sounded like it came from Mars, guitarist Link Wray had a huge impact on an entire generation of rock artists, from Bob Dylan to Pete Townsend to Neil Young. Even though “Rumble” had no lyrics, frightened clergymen had the song banned from local radio stations, so menacing were its chords.

“Draggin'” has no lyrics either, but it does effectively evoke the sounds and sights of the drag strip, as you’re about to see. Just for fun, the video below includes scenes from the 1957 film, Teen Age Thunder. In this adolescent potboiler, watch (at around 1:42) for the squirreliest organized drag race ever filmed, followed by a dramatic playground scuffle. It’s pure cheese—you’re going to love it.

  1. Great music, apart from the drummer losing his way a coiple of times, and the film is more ‘adult’ than most modern films aimed at the teen market, which isn’t saying much. My opinion, obviously!
