 Ford is cutting 7,000 white-collar jobs, around 10 percent of its salaried staff worldwide, as part of a cost-cutting effort to save the automaker around $600 million a year. More at CNN. 

 In an unusually strong-worded statement, Toyota Motor Corp. rebuked President Donald Trump’s declaration that imported cars threaten U.S. national security. More at The Detroit News.

+  Mercedes-Benz reported to its dealers in the USA that the automaker’s models and trim offerings will be significantly reduced in number over the next 12 months. More at Automotive News Europe. 

 Eighteen large institutional investors in General Motors have united to warn the automaker that it must back stricter national fuel economy standards. More at the Detroit Free Press. 

+   Penske driver Simon Pagenaud claimed the pole position in qualifying for next Sunday’s Indy 500, while two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso failed to make the field. More at the Indianapolis Star. 

 The Rivian R1T electric pickup concept made an official appearance at Overland Expo West in in Flagstaff, Arizona sporting a novel slide-out electric camp grille. More at Autoblog.

 +  Two premium-badged family sedans, the Volvo S60 and the BMW 5 Series, have received the 2019 Best Overall Value of the Year awards from Intellichoice. More at Motor Trend.

 Five-time champion Lewis Hamilton says current Formula 1 cars are not challenging enough to drive, as evidenced by the number of teen-aged drivers in the series. More at Motorsport.com.

  1. It was stunning to watch Alonso get bumped from the field. McLaren looks increasingly like the gang that couldn’t shoot straight.
