 Toyota will develop full-electric vehicles and batteries with Chinese automaker BYD as it ramps up its alignments with local partners to engage the China market. More at Automotive News Europe. 

+  Due to slow sales of the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, Ford will lay off 200 workers at its Oakville, Ontario plant in September, with more layoffs possible in January. More at Reuters.

 Ex-Jaguar design chief Ian Callum has founded his own design firm called Callum, which plans to serve clients in the automotive, audio, fashion, and lifestyle markets. More at Autoblog.

+   Noted NASCAR crew chief Nick Harrison, who fielded winning race cars for Austin Dillon, Paul Menard, Kurt Busch, and others, died suddenly at 37, Kaulig Racing announced. More at ESPN. 

 A 1972 Datsun 240Z with an immaculate restoration commissioned by Nissan North America, one of 37 arranged by the company, sold for $101, 240 in an online auction. More at The Drive. 

 Indiana-based diesel engine maker Cummins has offered to purchase Volkswagen’s MAN Energy Solutions unit, producers of large ship and power-station engines. More at U.S. News & World Report. 

 Don Summer, noted Detroit area classic car restorer, parts manufacturer, and founder of the Meadow Brook Concours and other events, has passed away at 86. More at the Detroit Free Press. 

+   Shanghai-based automaker SAIC, which operates joint ventures in China with General Motors and Volkswagen, is forecasting a 7 percent sales decline in 2019. More at The Detroit News. 

 Mecum Auctions reports that its recent sale at the Portland Expo Center in Oregon generated $6.6 million in total sales with 253 vehicles going to new homes. More at Classic Cars.com Journal. 

+   Formula 1 chiefs have set up a “rule breaking” group of top aerodynamic specialists to probe for potential loopholes that could thwart the 2021 technical regulations. More at Motorsport.com.
