+   Boosted by a better-than-expected December, U.S. auto sales set another record in 2016 at 17.55 million vehicles, a 0.4 percent increase over 2015. More at The Detroit News. 

+   President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose a hefty border tax on Toyota if the company builds Corolla cars for the U.S. market at a plant in Mexico as announced in 2015. More at Reuters. 

+   Bentley has revealed its “fastest and most powerful” vehicle ever, the 209-mph Continental Supersports, powered by a 700 hp twin-turbo V12. More at the Detroit Free Press. 

+   The British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC), which owns the Silverstone motor racing circuit, says it may exercise its option to sever its contract to hold the British Grand Prix. More at Motorsport.com.

+   Sears Holdings will sell its famed Craftsman tool and hardware brand to Stanley Black & Decker in a deal that could eventually top $1 billion. More at the Chicago Tribune. 

+   Faraday Future unveiled its FF91 electric sedan, which boasts a 130-kWh battery pack said to be good for 378 miles, at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. More at Autoblog. 

+   Nissan is halting joint development of luxury cars with Daimler AG, ending a project that would have produced Infiniti cars based on a shared Mercedes-Benz MFA2 platform. More at Automotive News Europe. 

+   Pioneering hot rodder and speed equipment manufacturer Nick Arias Jr., who founded Arias Pistons in 1969, has passed away at 87. More at Competition Plus. 

+   At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Honda debuted a self-balancing motorcycle and the NeuV concept, an all-electric urban vehicle. More at Motor Trend. 

+   Tesla Motors  has started mass production of lithium-ion battery cells at its new Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada with partner Panasonic of Japan. More at CNBC.
