Today’s headlines:

+   General Motors was ordered by a federal court to face a class action claiming it violated laws of 26 states by knowingly selling thousands of vehicles with faulty transmissions. More at Reuters. 

 Ford Motor Company has appointed Todd Willing to be its new head of design for Ford and Lincoln vehicles worldwide, replacing Anthony Lo, who left the company in May. More at The Detroit News. 

 Cox Automotive estimates that U.S. new vehicle sales for August will remain relatively stable, and is projecting a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 15.4 million units. More at CBT News. 

 NASCAR has released its 2025 Cup series schedule, which features a race in Mexico City in June and a shuffling of the venues in the late-season playoffs season. More at Fox Sports. 

 EV maker Xpeng of China announced that its mass-market brand Mona will offer some models with 325 miles of range and driver-assist features for less than $17,000. More at CNBC.

+   Britain’s car production fell for the fifth consecutive month in July to 65,478 vehicles, reportedly hampered hurt by model changeovears and temporary supply chain disruptions. More at World Auto Forum. 

 The Oakland, California Unified School District has sdopted an all-EV 74-bus fleet provided by transportation solutions company Zum that features bidirectional charging. More at Autoweek. 

 Featured consignments at the Bonhams|Cars Goodwood Revival sale on September 7 will include a 2021 Aston Martin V12 Speedster and a 1998 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupé. More at Old Cars. 

+   GM will fold its BrightDrop commercial electric van operation into the Chevrolet division, where the vehicles will be marketed, sold, and serviced under the Chevrolet name. More at Motor Trend.  

 American driver Logan Sargeant has been dropped by Williams Formula 1 for the rest of the 2024 season as the team promotes junior driver Franco Colapinto to the seat. More at Racer.

  1. I’ve owned several British cars. They were the Teslas of the pre-airbag years; marginal engineering but they could do no wrong in the owner’s eyes. They’ve done the world a favor by producing fewer of them.
