Today’s headlines:  

 In response to the new U.S. tariffs from the Trump administration, General Motors will shift some truck production from Mexico and Canada to its Fort Wayne, Indiana plant. More at MSN News. 

 Tesla sales plunged 13 percent in the first quarter to 336,681 vehicles, which observers attribute to an aging product line and CEO Elon Musk’s political activism. More at U.S. News & World Report. 

 Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will match U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 percent auto tariffs with a tariff on vehicles imported from the United States. More at The Detroit News. 

 Aston Martin Lagonda (AML) will sell its stake in the Aston Martin Formula 1 team but remain title sponsor as part of an equity raise aimed at generating over $160 million. More at Racer. 

+   Volkswagen has instructed its U.S. dealers to include a separate line item on vehicle price stickers that reflects the 25 percent tariff on vehicles from Europe and Mexico. More at Motor Illustrated. 

+   Winners in the 1Q 2025 sales race include GM SUVs and Hyundai and Kia sedans, while the losers were Dodge, Corvette and Mustang, and Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer. More at Car and Driver. 

+   Toyota reported a 7.7 percent increase in March 2025 U.S. sales, with electrified vehicles scoring a 39.6 percent increase to account for 48.7 percent of the volume. More at CBT News. 

 Stellantis is imposing temporary layoffs at five factories in Michigan and Indiana due to production halts at its vehicle assembly plants in Windsor, Ontario and Toluca, Mexico. More at Autoblog. 

+   A 1927 Bentley 3/8-Litre Competition Special known as “The Other Gun” and a 1912 Rolls-Royce Sillver Ghost will be featured at the Bonhams|Cars Goodwood Members Meeting sale. More at Old Cars. 

+   Former IndyCar Series president Jay Frye has been named president of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, where he will oversee the team’s IndyCar and IMSA operations. More at Forbes.

  1. Canada will have a very small choice in vehicles if they pursue that path. My research indicates the following:

    no Ford products except the Nautilus
    no GM products except the Silverado
    no Stellantis products except Charger, Pacifica & Voyager
    no Honda/Acura except the Civic & CRV
    no Nissan
    no Subaru
    no Toyota except RAV4
    no BMW X suvs

    They could import many of these from overseas but the extra cost could equal what they’d pay under the tariffs. The increase in Chargers sold would probably do a lot of good for Stellantis.

    • Canada would prefer to do without rather than bending over for King Donald. Didn’t the U.S.A. once fight a revolution rather than bending over for a monarchy? Boy, are those days gone!
